The Open Door: Global Influences in the Art of Oil Painting
This is a six-week course is developed specifically for our summer school.
In depth and extensive, you will get to learn the history of artists, subject matter and techniques all while applying this to your own practice.
This comprehensive course covers the greats from every corner of the globe including Japan and the Floating World: Hokusai, Hiroshige, Monet, Whistler and Van Gogh. Africa and The Benin: Picasso, Braque and Cubism, Die Brücke. North Africa and The Ottoman Empire: the Orientalists and Matisse. India and Colour: Rothko, Howard Hodgkin. The Pacific: Oceana, Gaugin and Tahiti. East European Dispora and American Abstract Expressionism.
This is the opportunity to experiment with materials and to adapt and combine techniques to produce personalised and independent artworks. For those able to produce paintings independently or who have completed an intermediate course. Under the guidance of a professional artist students will work on specialised projects incorporating painting techniques and materials. We will be using the Winson & Newton Artist's Oil Colour paint range.
You will need to have paid in full before the first session of your class. Your place is not guaranteed until we have received full payment. Please book early in order to guarantee your place on the course.
Tutor Profile: Rachel Levitas
In 2010 Rachel won the Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize for her Urban Fox III painting. Based on an experience of, ’...young foxes play-fighting in the street in Lewisham. Beautiful and bold opportunists that represent the rise of forces previously suppressed; the return of the wild to London’s streets, creativity emerging and adapting in a collapsing economy.’ Rachel studied Fine Art at Camberwell School of Art, Advanced Printmaking at Central St Martins and Postgraduate Painting at the Royal Academy Schools (awarded the Turner Gold Medal for Painting) Her most recent solo exhibition was with Rebecca Hossack in 2018.

Do I bring my own art materials ? All materials are supplied but wear old clothes!
Do I need to bring anything extra with me? We recommend you have the following equipment/items available for ahead of the start of your class:
- two jam jars with lids
- two small jars for medium
- a table easel
- photocopier paper
- palette (use a ceramic tile or a piece of glass)
