POSTPONED: Excavations of the Heart

An exhibition exploring the form, symbolism and experiential dimension of the heart

Due to the current coronavirus (COVID-19) situation, Elephant West is temporarily closed and as such, Excavation of the Heart has been postponed until we re-open.  Stay tuned as we shall soon be launching a series of online sessions.

Excavations of the Heart is an exhibition that explores the form, the symbolism and the experiential dimension of the heart.  The works created by artist Sofie Layton in collaboration with bioengineer Giovanni Biglino and health psychologist Jo Wray, and a team of other artists invites you to explore different facets of this extraordinary organ through film, sound works, printed textiles, and sculptures presented alongside medical 3D printed models of real hearts and medical images configured as different artworks and installations.

The exhibition represents artwork created over 5 years developed through a participative narrative process and includes – Excavations – a new totemic sculpture by Sofie Layton that re-interprets the anatomical outlines of the artist’s own heart by a robotic arm, realised at the Royal College of Art in 2019 and work from The Heart of the Matter, a national public engagement project supported by the Wellcome Trust, the Arts Council England and other funding bodies (www.insidetheheart.org)(www.sofielayton.co.uk).

The exhibition is accompanied by a programme of events in collaboration with Imperial College London and the Invention Rooms.
